Abstract: The aim of this work is to summarize the interpretration of the cultural- philosophical and social references of contemporary Western theorists: American literary critic Fredric Jameson and French philosopher, essayist Gilles Lipovetsky, on the background of the theoretical concepts of other contemporary authors. The authors are the renowned critics of contemporary mass culture, consumer society, but if Fredric Jameson describes our era as postmodern times, Gilles Lipovetsky speaks about the next period – hypermodern times (hypermodernity). After a closer comparison of the details from both authors, we get a fairly diverse picture about our society. Jameson‘s work Postmodernism or the Cultural Logic of Late Capitalism was written in the 1980s (the Czech translation published in 2016); Lipovetsky publishes his works like Le Bonheur paradoxal, L‘Empire de l‘éphémère, La Société de déception, Les Temps hypermodernes from 1990s to the present. Notwithstanding different normative positions, there is a strong mutual interference between their concepts that can be useful for exploration, understanding, but also criticism of our epoch.

Key words: Fredric Jameson – Gilles Lipovetsky – Philosophy of culture – Postmodernity – Hypermodernity – Consumership – Commodification – Simulacrum – Nostalgia – Fashion – Flexibility – Globalization
