Abstract: This paper deals with the social function of private property according to Thomas Aquinas and John Duns Scotus. The conception of private property is in both medieval authors situated in the conception of natural law, in which the common good is articulated as the goal of the private property. The social function of pri-vate property is not automatically realized by the „unvisible hand“ of the free market, but through the inner ethical motivation and through the „visible hand“ of the social authority, which cares about common good and bliss of all citizen.
