Abstract: The study asks what is meant by the term „image of the world“. The image of the world is a metaphor that cannot be interpreted literally. In a figurative sense, we can say that the „image of the world“ is the idea of perceptible reality as a whole, which is more than the sum of its parts. But then we will look in vain for an explanation of the terms used: what is an idea, a perception, a reality, a whole? Another point of the article is the relationship between „world image“ and „world view“. We come to conclusion that there is no direct relationship between philosophy and images of the world, and the same applies to worldview. A final issue concerns whether the theory of the Anthropocene creates a specific „world image“; the article rejects this possibility.

Keywords: Image of the world – Worldview – Metaphor – Ontology – Realism – Anthropocene
