Abstract: In terms of public health, India‘s lockdown in response to the spread of the novel coronavirus can be assessed as a right step that helped not overload the Indian healthcare system. On the other hand, it becomes clear that the side effects of the lockdown will pose a much greater challenge for the Indian society than the coronavirus itself. As the lockdown has been extended, the slowdown of the Indian economy and its severe impact on the informal migrating workers seems inevitable. At the same time, Indian polity experiences another spike of tensions between the religious communities, and a widening gap between the middle and working classes.
