Abstract: The paper deals with philosophical and ethical questions focused on the problem of extraterrestrial life and extraterrestrial intelligence. From a broader cosmic perspective, we can better understand the nature of human cognition, map the structure of our fundamental beliefs and expectations, and gain insight into the conditions of our actions. Philosophy within the discourse on extraterrestrial life and intelligence can assess the variability of possibilities, explain the conceptual basis, compare and evaluate arguments and counterarguments, interpret scientific results, theoretically frame examples and counterexamples. The exploration of exoplanets is a challenge for the philosophy of science, the search for biomarkers is related to the philosophical explication of the concept of life. The SETI (CETI, METI) projects inspire philosophy to analyze the concepts of intelligence, rationality, language, communication and action. Last but not least, the concept of extraterrestrial life and civilizations opens the field for ethics and astroethics.
